British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory, the Chagos Archipelago, is not a travel destination in any ordinary sense. Its largest island, Diego Garcia, hosts a major US-UK military base, and access to the territory is tightly restricted — there is no civilian tourism, no hotels, and no way for travelers to visit. The wider Chagos islands are otherwise uninhabited, ringed by coral reefs and clear water that host significant marine biodiversity, studied mainly by scientists and military personnel. It remains, for practical purposes, closed to travel.
