Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands are a wind-scoured, treeless archipelago in the South Atlantic where wildlife, not scenery in the conventional sense, is the main draw. Beaches and cliffs host huge colonies of penguins — gentoo, king, rockhopper, Magellanic — along with albatrosses and seals, often with almost no other visitors around. Stanley, the small capital, has a distinctly British feel, with red phone boxes and pubs standing against the bleak, open landscape. It's a niche destination reached mostly by flight from Chile or expedition ship.
