Tokelau

Tokelau is about as remote as inhabited places get: three small coral atolls in the South Pacific with no airstrip, reachable only by an overnight boat from Samoa. There's essentially no tourism industry — no hotels built for visitors, no set itinerary to follow — and the atolls' few thousand residents live largely on fishing and subsistence farming much as they have for generations. What makes Tokelau remarkable isn't anything built for outsiders; it's a traditional Polynesian way of life persisting on land that barely rises above the waves.
