Tajikistan
Tajikistan is dominated by the Pamirs, a knot of some of the world's highest mountains, where the Pamir Highway winds past turquoise lakes, hot springs and villages perched at altitudes that leave visitors gasping. Dushanbe offers a gentler introduction, with tree-lined boulevards and Soviet-era architecture, but the country's real draw is remote trekking through valleys where Wakhi and Kyrgyz herding communities still shape daily life far from any conventional tourist trail.
