Tipping isn't deeply ingrained but is increasingly expected in tourist-oriented restaurants and hotels; rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% is appreciated when service isn't already included, and small tips for guides/drivers on excursions (e.g. Lac Assal or whale-shark trips) are customary.

• Djibouti is a predominantly Muslim country — dress modestly (covered shoulders/knees), especially outside beach resorts, and avoid public displays of affection.
• During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect.
• Always ask permission before photographing local people, and never photograph military sites, government buildings, ports, or airports.
• Use your right hand for eating, greeting, and handing over items, as the left hand is considered unclean.
• Chewing khat is a widespread daily social custom (especially afternoons) — it's legal locally, so don't be alarmed by its prevalence, though bringing it into other countries is illegal.
• Greet people patiently with time for small talk before business; rushing a conversation can be seen as rude.
