Djibouti
Djibouti's landscape is stark and volcanic — salt flats shimmer around Lake Assal, one of the lowest and saltiest points on Earth, and the desert interior is home to Afar pastoralist communities adapted to extreme heat. Its real draw for the few travelers who make it here is beneath the surface: the Gulf of Tadjoura offers some of the world's most reliable whale shark encounters. Tourism infrastructure is minimal, and this remains a destination for the adventurous rather than the casual visitor.
